{Jaiden is potty training}

Yipee! Yesterday AM Billy took Jaiden out of bed after he woke up and was ready to strap this little baggie thingy that we needed to adhere on his “pecker!” because we had to collect his pee for some testing that needed to be done (I was concerned about him not potty training, no desire, no interest…yada yada yada)…I was working out upstairs (getting ready to meet a friend for tea at Starbucks…so looking forward to it, I didn’t have to work…not many Saturday’s I get off) and I was listening to Billy the whole time talk to Jaiden, Jaiden is freaking out, screaming, crying…finally Billy “flipped out” and told Jaiden that he was throwing his pull-outs out in the garbage can…out they went (out the front door!)…well I finish my workout and console Jaiden, put some Scooby Doo underwear on him, went downstairs and gave the kids breakie…I than told Billy it was unacceptable the way he “flipped out” on Jaiden and there was a better way to handle the situation…I mean how would you like to be taken out of bed and have something strapped onto your pecker? Anyways, I told Billy he better go out for the day (I was more than just mad!), so he got ready and headed out the door…he went to Canmore for the day. In the meantime I explained to Jaiden that he needs to use the potty from now on for pooh and pee otherwise he will be in pain! So he had one accident and than about 1 hr later said “Mommy”…I replied Yes (he was upstairs, so I was kind of wondering what he was doing – keeping close eye on him – no hardwood in our house!) I have to pee…so we run to the washroom…I sit on the stool, he sits on the toilet…waiting…waiting…Mommy, it’s not coming…it’s OK just be patient and wait, sometimes it takes a little while…about 2 minutes later he PEES…oh my gosh…I was so flippin’ happy I had tears of joy in my eyes (this is a kid that blatantly did not want anything to do with the toilet or training toilets, underwear or anything mentioned about using one!), hi 5’s all around, much praise, Taylor was very excited to…time for a sucker! and a sticker on his potty chart…almost 3 years and 5 months later…geez. So, as the day goes by he spends every 5 mins trying to pee…novelty of course…we had to call Billy of course…and of course again I had to get my 2 cents in…the day goes by with much praise and goodies. I also promised that probably by the end of the week if all goes well I will take him to Toys r’ Us for a special present…he said Hotwheels, really fast hotwheels! So Billy gets home around 3PM…we chat…he apologizes, he hangs out for a bit than leaves again with Taylor to go for dinner with his family…of course someone has to stay home with Jaiden…first day potty training…so I volunteer…the next challenge is poohing on the potty…around 6ish…Jaiden runs to the bathroom to “pee” (ya right! – I’m sure his bladder is so empty), I ask if he needs help…he says Yes, I go in the bathroom…it smells like he’s been farting…I said do you have to pooh…No, he gets off…than he goes I have to pooh AND pee…OK, he sits down again…I leave go in the kitchen and than he goes Mommy…I’m done…I come in and he has successfully poohed in the potty…yeah! Hi 5…Jaiden says Mommy, are you excited? Yes, very! The next challenge…bedtime…I got him ready for bed…the normal routine…asked if he had to go pee…No…OK…into bed…he came downstairs I asked if he had to pee…No, I went upstairs, the bathroom light was on and the toilet seat lid up…I knew he tried…I came downstairs and he was in the bathroom pulling his pants up…he tried…successfully. He went back upstairs, explained to him that he could only have a tiny bit of juice / water…he asked why, I said because you don’t want to pee the bed, you are wearing underwear now…OK, I only have pretzels! Good boy! He fell asleep…woke up this AM about 12 hours later…DRY! Awesome…I am so proud and excited! No more pull-ups…after about 7 years of diapers and pull-ups between 2 kids…well OK, there was about 1 1/2 years without them. I would have to say that he is potty trained in a day…I mean I’m sure there will still be accidents but I think the worst is over and that was actually getting him to sit on the toilet!

“They” say you shouldn’t rush your kids, they will be ready when they are (boy’s take longer)…but, of course for me Taylor was potty trained around 2 and I wanted so badly for Jaiden to be also (I mean it’s embarrassing…I think when your kid is almost 3 1/2 and is still pooing and peeing in a pull-up…I feel it looks bad on me…the parent – it’s just my own insecurities) also, Jaiden has some speech delays so with that comes delay’s all around!

Well I didn’t have to worry I guess…

Now, I keep saying Jaiden’s potty training has nothing to do with Billy “flipping” out, Jaiden is potty training because he wants to and he is a smart kid! If anything Billy’s “flipping” out pushed me to be “strong” and stand my ground! He still regresses occasionally and says: “Daddy thru my pull-ups out…is he bringing more home?”

    That’s awesome Michelle. I have two boys and they were both about 3 and a half before they were trained…. seemed to me like they’d never do it. sigh!

    Yay for you! I can’t WAIT for Baylie to train! I’m gonna try again tomorrow, since the kids are out of school. She was the same way – no interest WHATSOEVER! I had my other girls trained at or before 2 years(including the girl I babysat!). This is SOOOOOO furtrating! I want it to be DONE! Maybe Billy can come over and flip out at Baylie 😉

    Well, congrats to you both! That’s one hurdle you won’t have to jump again!

    I was so glad to read your potty training story…since that’s coming up in the near future with Ace who is 2 1/2 right now. But he is no where even close to being ready. Just hearing stuff like this from other moms makes me feel much better.

    CONGRATULATIONS!!! That is awesome Chelle! And I am so proud of Jaiden. What a good boy! We also used the “cheerio” idea for Michael when he was potty training. You throw a few into the toilet and it is like a game, he aims at the cheerios when he is peeing. It seemed to work with him and before we knew it, he was doing it without the cheerios. As for the flip out, I can imagine Billy being very exasperated but good for you for holding your ground! We have to remember that out timeline may not be the same as our childrens and when they are comfortable to do it on their own, they will! Love you all tons.

    Congrats Michelle and Jaiden! We are trying with Braden but, alas he is different than his brother – trained at 2 1/2 – still not night trained. Braden is getting close to 3 and really just doesn’t care. So it is good to hear that it isn’t abnormal. I have the same feeling that it reflects on me. But, really who knows with these little guys, eh? Glad to hear you are through it though. So there is hope for our home!
